GUIDE

Nazca Lines: Plenty of theories have been put forward concerning these mysterious lines, from landing strips for extraterrestrials to lines scribbled from a giant seismograph. Yet, the most likely theory comes from the German scholar, Maria Reiche, who spent her life studying them and believed them to be a monumental astronomic calendar, whose images marked different periods or solar phases.

Paracas National reserve: Visit part of the 355,000 ha of the Paracas nature reserve. Travel across what seems like desert wasteland but what really is home to a huge variety of marine birds (locally known as aves guaneras for their production of guano – droppings used as fertilizer) and other wildlife, the entire time taking in the unique beauty of their natural habitat.

Ballestas Islands: These spectacular islands, eroded into many caves and arches, provide shelter for thousands of seabirds and hundreds of sea-lions. The islands are home to over 150 species of marine bird including the Humboldt penguin, cormorants and pelicans. On the shores can be seen large numbers of sea-lions and in the sea it is possible to encounter dolphins.
