Plenty of theories have been put forward concerning these mysterious lines, from landing strips for extraterrestrials to lines scribbled from a giant seismograph. Yet, the most likely theory comes from the German scholar, Maria Reiche, who spent her life studying them and believed them to be a monumental astronomic calendar, whose images marked different periods or solar phases.
