Main Square |

The Main Square was the heart of the old colonial city and it has become one of the main tourist attractions in Peru. A remarkable 17th century bronze fountain rests in the middle of the square, while the Cathedral, the Government Palace and the Provincial Municipality of Lima are strategically located around it. |

The original building was destroyed by the 1741 earthquake, but it was later rebuilt. It rests in the same place where the first Major Church of Lima stood in 1535. Its austere interior still preserves historical treasures such as the choir stalls carved by Baltasar Noguera, beautiful lateral altars and Francisco Pizarro's mortal remains. Another popular tourist attraction in Peru, the Religious Art Museum, which is part of this visit, carries an important collection of paintings, sculptures, chalices and chasubles. |
