    PUNO

    Peru’s Folklore
    Capital

The Collao plateau, ancient home of the Tiahuanaco, one of the Andes most influential cultures, rolls out with gentle hills and starkly beautiful landscapes around lake Titicaca, the world’s highest navigable lake, and Puno, the region’s capital city.

Besides being recognized for its stunning scenery, and home to a variety of typical Peruvian highland species, it is also recognized as one of the most representative cities of our folklore, with more than 300 kinds of dances originating here, and amongst them the most famous being the diablada and the morenada.

    CUISINE

The cuisine of Puno, although not the best known in Peru, has a number of rich, warming dishes that one can’t miss out on. Of the soups, chairo, a beef and lamb soup and thimpo, a lighter lamb broth, are among the best. There is a range of preparations of the iconic alpaca meat, a number of stews like the pesque and the sajta, and the Cancacho a wood oven roast of lamb or pork. From the lake, the trout are among the best in Peru, as well as Peruvian Silverside and small freshwater fish, ishpi.
