Hotel Libertador Arequipa

Arequipa is a city built in the shadow of volcanoes. The most important peak, a geographic and cultural icon is Misti, with Chachani and Pichu Pichu being her most prominent neighbors. Due to its location, the early engineers of the city had easy access to large amounts of a light-colored volcanic rock called sillar, and used it in many early constructions, earning Arequipa her nickname, the White City. It is the second largest city in Peru and the most important in the south, a designation it has held from pre-Hispanic times as evidenced in the ancient worked terraces of the Colca Valley.

The historic center of Arequipa was included in the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2000.

CUISINE

Arequipeña cuisine is vital and diverse, sourcing products from the high Andean plains as well the fertile valleys and well-stocked rivers around the city. Some of Peru’s most popular dishes come from this region: cuy chactado, a crispy, succulent fried guinea pig; rocoto relleno, a fiery pepper stuffed with ground beef; the famous solterito salad and the shrimp soup, chupe de camarones, easily the best loved of the city’s creations. Not to forget the adobo Arequipeño, a rich red pork stew marinated and cooked for 24 hours and for those with a sweet tooth, the queso helado, an icy, milky dessert.

Sample these and more in our restaurant, Los Robles.

HANDICRAFTS

The region is best known for its finely woven and masterfully finished wool and alpaca sweaters scarves, blankets and other accessories. While Arequipa has a sunny climate most of the year, nighttime temperatures in winter can drop below 5°C, making one of these items an indispensable buy.

Other highlights for curio shoppers are tooled leather trinkets and carvings from sillar, the pale volcanic rock; while collectors will find a myriad of antique shops throughout the city which beg for exploration and hours of rummaging.
