The Historic Center of Lima, with a veritable treasure trove of Spanish colonial Architecture, is one of the city’s biggest tourist draws. It was declared a “World Heritage Site” by UNESCO in 1988 and in 1996, a “Cultural Patrimony of Humanity”. Highlights are the Plaza Mayor and the adjoining Government Palace, the Cathedral of Lima and the Municipality of Lima, which holds the historical records of the foundation of Lima and later Independence. In addition, you will find museums, art galleries, restaurants and traditional bars, theaters and numerous pedestrian streets lined with shopping arcades.
